Gosh, it is almost July and you may have been looking forward to a long summer spent at home, with plenty of time to relax and enjoy your backyard. No plans? Don’t fret, there’s still plenty of summer ahead and some wonderful opportunities to find last-minute deals for a quick family trip.
Encourage your kids to be involved in the planning and decision making of your vacation. You want to travel with your children, to enrich their lives, and expand their emotional and cultural horizons.
Travel at the right time. Try to travel between Tuesday and Thursday rather than during prime weekend time and if you can try to stay a bit flexible with your dates. Even if dreaming of a tropical beach getaway, a trip to a big city or even camping in the country may be more cost effective.
Check with the tourist board to see what is happening in the city you are traveling to. Festivals, concerts, and sporting events can bring lots of people and higher rates.
Look for off-season deals. For instance, if you are planning a trip up to the mountains where it is expensive in the winter months for skiing there could be incentives to get you to visit during the summer. Also, many Caribbean and Mexico resorts offer discounts for travelers in August and September including kids-stay-or-eat-free packages.
Look for family-friendly packages. Some hotel chains offer families at hotels across the United States that may include a meal credit or a backpack full of goodies for kids. All-Inclusive properties or a cruise can offer a great value and fun for everyone.
Buy tickets for attractions before you leave. If you are traveling to busy areas like Orlando or California; Disney, Universal Studios and other large theme parks may limit the number of visitors allowed in their parks at one time. You do not want to be disappointed to arrive only to find out you cannot get into the park.

Remember that even three or four days away can refresh you during the long hot days of summer. It’s not where you travel to but who you’re with and allowing yourself to make YOUR own family memories that will last a lifetime! Travel allows you to enjoy yourself and your children at the same time. After all, you only have 18 short years to be able to enjoy your kids before they go off to college!
